Energy and Protein Interaction of the Lactating Sow
نویسنده
چکیده
Improved genetics, nutrition, housing and management systems have permitted significant increases in milk production of lactating sows. In 1972, Boomgaardt et al. (1972) studied sows that produced about 8.5 pounds of milk daily. In contrast, Johnston et al. (1993) reported daily litter growth rates of 4.86 pounds which equates to an estimated milk production of 19.5 pounds per day. In spite of these large improvements, the genetic potential for growth of nursing piglets is still not realized (Boyd et al., 1995) suggesting that improved nutritional programs that result in increased milk production will increase growth rate of nursing pigs. Heavier pigs at weaning may be of particular importance in modern production systems that implement relatively short lactations (1418 days).

Lactating Swine Nutrient Recommendations
Many factors influence sow productive efficiency and sow herd profitability, but inadequate feeding programs for the sow are major contributors to problems with high sow attrition and poor productivity. The primary challenge of feeding highly productive sows involves minimizing the negative nutrient (energy and protein) balance during lactation in order to minimize short-term and long-term repr...
متن کاملEffects of Dietary Protein and Energy Levels on Productive and Reproductive Performance of Lactating Buffaloes
Twenty eight lactating buffaloes were used in a completely randomized design with 2×2 factorial arrangement of four experimental diets including low protein–low energy (LP-LE), low protein–high energy (LP-HE), high protein–low energy (HP-LE) and high protein–high energy (HP-HE). Results showed that the HP-HE diet recorded the highest digestibility coefficients of CP, EE, NFE, nutritive values, ...
متن کاملEffects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid on Milk Composition and Baby Pig Growth in Lactating Sows
The lactating sow limits the growth potential of the neonatal pig by limiting the supply of nutrients and/or not providing the optimum balance of nutrients to maximize growth. Therefore, alterations in sow milk composition to provide an optimum pattern of nutrients could improve piglet weight gains. Fifty-five mixed parity lactating sows (Landrace x Chester White) were blocked by parity and ran...
متن کاملEfficiency of utilization of dietary energy for milk production in lactating crossbred cattle (Bos Indicus)
The present study was conducted on efficiency of utilization of dietary energy for milk production in lactating crossbred cattle. 18 lactating crossbred cattle of early to mid-lactation, approximate body weight (375.39±23.43 kg), milk yield, parity and stage of lactation were divided into three groups of six animals each and were fed 0, 50 and 100% diammonium phosphate (DAP) in the mineral mixt...
متن کاملNitrogen Metabolism in the Young Sow
The establishment of quantitative relationships between nitrogen (N) retention and energy and protein intake in breeding animals is essential to enable producers to determine the consequences of altering nutrient intake on changes in body composition, reproductive efficiency and lactational performance. Results of an experiment with pregnant gilts revealed that maximum rates of N retention occu...
